Viewmount

Location

Viewmount is an east/west road.  It is wide and was recently repaved.  The section in question runs between Merivale and Chesterton. It has lines painted on the middle and sides, likely as traffic calming measures.

Problem

This is a missed opportunity to create a bike lane on a wide street. Whoever was painting lines on the street really went to town!

You can see in the following photo of Viewmount at the intersection of Carmen Grant the large width of the road.

A similar situation exists at Overlake.

Suggestion

Remove the outer lines and replace with a painted and signed bike lane.

I’ve complained about this very thing to the local councillor, with no results. They wasted a ton of paint when they could have put the cars in the centre, then bike lanes, then parking lanes. This is a perfect example of the lack of forethought.

Too bad that hey didn’t make the centre buffer zone between the two car lanes more narrow- then there’d be more room for cyclists between the parked cars and the traffic lane.

Along this stretch the outside lanes are used for parking and as bus stops. It’d be great to have bike lanes here but it’s already a safe and tranquil place to cycle so it wouldn’t be my top priority for investment.
