Bank and Kilborn Place

Location

Kilborn Place (not Ave.) is a small street that has a few addresses and has a large bend to it. There is a 20m sidewalk that extends from the bulbous part to the eastern side of Bank St.   This is used by many pedestrians to walk from Alta Vista to the Billings Bridge Plaza and the Billings Bridge Transitway Station.

There is a bicycle path that runs on the northbound direction on Bank in this area.

Problem

Cyclists, too, will want to get between Alta Vista and Billings Bridge.  To do so, they must dismount, lift their bike onto the sidewalk, walk 20m, and then place their bike on the Bank St. lane.  In reality, cyclists ride on the sidewalk.

An alternative involves going up to Kilborn Ave down to Bank St., which involves going up and down a hill and going through a busy intersection.

Suggestion

This is a great opportunity for a shared-mode path that can accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.

Jon, indeed “some” cyclists may use the sidewalk, but lots of us don’t (and/or move off onto grass/road, or dismount if a pedestrian comes along). For a cyclist to get from Kilborn place onto Bank, the only option is ride on the sidewalk or over bumpy ground/grass, to get to the big drop in the curb onto the southbound Bank St. bike lane.

Ya, it’s never done. Cyclists break the bylaw all the time and speed down the sidewalk endangering pedestrians.

Additionally a bus lane starts at the point the sidewalk meets Bank Street. The curb drop is severe.

An improper dismount or ride to road surface could be catastrophic.
