Location
Hemlock has signs indicated showing it is a bike route, and the City of Ottawa shows it as having a bike lane on the city bicycle map.
The Problem
The bike lane on Hemlock was there, then it disappeared, and now there’s a proposal to go back to the way things were a year ago.

Status
| April, 2011 | The City puts out a proposal to reinstall the lane from St. Laurent to Marier. You can see the proposal pamphlet here. Concerned cyclists should contact the city using the contact information in the pamphlet. |
| Sept. 27, 2010 | The Manor Park Community Association sends a note to their counsellor, Jacques Legendre, whose assistant asks the situation of the city.
The city replies back that Hemlock actually has no cycling facility, and parking is allowed, so the bike lane was installed in error, which is why the stencils were painted over. They said they would consider putting it back to a bike lane. |
| Sept. 24, 2010 | OBP and CfSC get multiple independent reports from cyclists of Hemlock’s bike lanes being eliminated. |
| Week of Sept. 20th, 2011 | Bike stencils are painted over with no notice. |
| 2006 | Hemlock is shown to have an on-road bicycle lane on the city map |
| around 2003 | Bicycle lane is installed on Hemlock |
Suggestions
- Re-instate the bicycle lane.
- At very least, announce when bicycle facilities will be removed.

I would prefer if the city could reduce the width of the traffic lanes and create a segregated 2-way bicycle path that would be safe for children’s use.
Quick update. I heard from the city planner who is working on the study and reccomendations for this route. I believe he is looking at the Hemlock-Beechwood corridor from St. Laurent to Coburg. I have encouraged him to look two blocks east to connect to the NCC’s Aviation Parkway paths. It is unfortunate that the rest of St. Patrick through the King Edward intersection and on to Sussex is not being considered.

This is an issue that grew by accident, I believe. A bit of history – not that it adds to a solution, but… one has to know the past to understand the present…
Hemlock used to have bike lanes both ways. About 8 years ago the road was repaved and the lanes were realigned, without any bike lane provisions at all. The city explained that they wanted to slow down traffic by mixing bikes in with cars (don’t you love feeling like a moving speedbump when you cycle along?). Of course, there was all this extra asphalt, which was then designated as a parking lane.
Along most of the stretch, there is little or no need for parking, and the parking lanes stayed empty. Cyclists naturally took them over; the city must have thought they *were* bike lanes, added painted markers, and confusion was created. This was the situation for a few years, until cyclists started to complain that cars are parked in the bike lane. The city then goes back to the original drawings and discovers the mistake. Their ‘solution’ is erasing the paint markers and keeping the parking lanes as such.
Solution: re-realign the lanes so that there are bike lanes again in both directions (requires redesign of the turning lane at Birch).
