Overview map showing section of Wellington
Wellington is a busy street with tourist, OC Transpo and STO busses. Going eastbound, at Elgin there are two sets of lanes that merge onto Wellington. The right lane becomes the onramp to the Colonel By, and straight through it becomes Rideau St. Most cyclists going eastbound will be trying to go straight onto the designated shared bicycle/car lane on Rideau St.
The Problem

Car traffic from Elgin merges across Wellington traffic. Other traffic, particularly buses, need to cross to the right lane to merge to the bus lane on Rideau St.
This intersection is quite complex as it involves multiple lanes of moving traffic. The merges here endanger cyclists, and traffic here is heavy in rush hour.
The first merge is drivers merging from Elgin. Apart from the cars needing to go to Colonel By, they all must cross to the left two lanes of Wellington, either to go straight on Rideau or take a left onto Sussex. These drivers are often looking for buses and not cyclists.
The next merge is for buses, which need to move to the rightmost lane to hook up with the bus lane on Rideau St.
The route for cyclists is also not indicated, so cyclists don’t know where they should be, and other traffic doesn’t know where to expect them.
Suggestions:
Create a bicycle lane that extends from Wellington through the intersection to Rideau St.

In the Street Film about Copenhagen approaches, simply slowing down the speed of the traffic could be a practical answer to this area that is so complicated even to drive through. If cars are going the same speed as the bikes, then it would be easier to accommodate the bike traffic with the same facilities as the cars. There are so many people in this area, and so should get some considerations for walking and cycling.
In the complex intersections, the bicycle passages area should be painted in solid color, such as blue used in Copenhagen, among other measures. See: http://www.streetfilms.org/copenhagen%E2%80%99s-climate-friendly-bike-friendly-streets/
